MEMORANDUM FOR RECORD
TO: All Media Personnel, Congressional Liaisons, and Approved Attendees FROM: Office of Strategic Communications and Event Continuity DATE: June 2, 2026 RE: Rescheduling of Annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner — Operational Update
Following the April incident at the security checkpoint adjacent to the dinner venue, a comprehensive assessment of event logistics and stakeholder availability has been completed. The dinner will be rescheduled to October 18, 2026, at the Washington Hilton.
The April event was interrupted when an individual breached the outer perimeter and discharged a firearm at the security checkpoint. No attendees inside the ballroom were impacted. The checkpoint has since been retrofitted with additional bollards and CCTV infrastructure. Security protocols have been enhanced in accordance with Department of Homeland Security recommendations.
Key considerations driving the rescheduling decision include the following:
First, several cabinet members and sitting senators indicated prior commitments in April that would prevent their attendance at a rescheduled date. The October window provides improved calendar alignment with the legislative calendar and executive branch travel schedules. This ensures maximum participation from high-level officials whose presence is essential to the event’s cultural significance.
Second, the catering vendor required a minimum of four months’ notice to source the appropriate vintage wines and coordinate with their supply chain partners. The April date created logistical constraints that would have necessitated a menu revision. The October date permits the original menu to be restored.
Third, preliminary ticket sales indicated that several prominent media figures would be traveling internationally during the April window. The October reschedule accommodates their itineraries and ensures that the evening maintains its traditional character as a gathering of the nation’s most influential journalists, government officials, and entertainment personalities.
The dinner serves as an important annual ritual in which members of the press corps engage in lighthearted banter with the sitting president and senior administration officials. The event is widely recognized as a cornerstone of the relationship between government and media, providing a venue for the exchange of witty remarks and mutual acknowledgment of the adversarial yet symbiotic nature of their institutional relationship.
The October date will permit the event to proceed as originally envisioned, with full attendance and uncompromised programming. A professional comedian has already been contracted and will deliver remarks that are expected to generate substantial laughter from the assembled audience.
The White House Press Office will distribute updated parking and credential information in early September. All attendees are reminded that security screening will occur at multiple checkpoints, and arrival times should be adjusted accordingly. The security checkpoint that was subject to the April incident has been relocated to a position further from the main entrance.
The rescheduling reflects the administration’s commitment to both security and the preservation of important institutional traditions. The nation’s press corps will have the opportunity to gather with government officials in a setting of conviviality and professional camaraderie, undeterred by logistical complications.
Questions regarding credentials, accessibility accommodations, or dietary restrictions should be directed to the WHCA administrative office. Questions regarding security procedures should be directed to the U.S. Secret Service.
