Following the procedure at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Tuesday and the subsequent diagnosis of lung cancer, the Holy See’s Dicastery for Communication convened an emergency session of the Coordinating Council for Pastoral Attention. The Council’s findings were circulated in a nine-page memorandum, of which the first page has been approved for public release.

The memorandum states that the pontiff’s health is now a matter of shared institutional interest and that the Church’s relevance over the coming quarter will be maintained through the careful sequencing of announcements. Photographs of the Holy Father, the first taken since his procedure, were released at 14:00 local time in accordance with the Council’s recommended image schedule. The Dicastery has assessed that the images are most effective when captioned ‘Strength and Continuity’ and placed adjacent to no weather data whatsoever.

Climate and hunger items were reassigned to the Council’s Subcommittee on Deferred Concerns, where they will remain until attention has been adequately redirected. A spokesperson confirmed that the reassignment reflects prioritisation rather than neglect. Prior commitments on both matters have been archived and will be reviewed should the news cycle require them.

The Council expressed gratitude to the medical team and noted that the Holy Father’s recovery will be addressed in a single press briefing, after which no further questions on the subject will be taken.
