STATEMENT FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT
May 8, 2026
Following recent operational activities in the Strait of Hormuz, this office wishes to clarify that the ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran remains fully operational and in good standing.
The exchange of ordnance that occurred over the past seventy-two hours should be understood not as a violation of the ceasefire framework, but rather as a series of discrete, defensive responses to provocative positioning. Each incident has been classified and assessed independently according to protocols established under Section 4.2 of the Joint Understanding on Maritime De-escalation (JUMD). At no point did these responses constitute a breach of the underlying commitment to reduced hostilities.
The Iranian government has alleged that a commercial oil tanker in international waters was targeted by United States assets. This characterization requires context. The vessel in question was operating in a designated zone of heightened maritime activity. Its trajectory and speed were consistent with patterns observed during previous periods of non-compliance. The decision to discharge ordnance in its proximity was made in accordance with established rules of engagement and should not be interpreted as aggressive action. The tanker sustained minor damage to its superstructure. No personnel were killed, though several sustained injuries that have been classified as non-fatal for statistical reporting purposes.
With regard to coastal infrastructure impacts, it should be noted that the facilities in question were located in areas previously identified as zones of concern. Precision strikes on these locations represent a calibrated response designed to maintain strategic balance. Iran’s characterization of these strikes as violations misunderstands the distinction between tactical operations and strategic violations. The ceasefire addresses strategic intent. Tactical adjustments remain within the parameters of acceptable conduct.
The President has instructed the State Department to issue a formal statement reaffirming American commitment to the ceasefire. Simultaneously, the Department of Defense has authorized a modest repositioning of naval assets in the region. This repositioning should be understood as a precautionary measure and does not indicate any change in the ceasefire status.
Iran’s diplomatic protests have been received and logged. A response will be issued through appropriate channels within thirty business days.
It is the assessment of this office that the ceasefire framework has proven resilient. The fact that both parties have engaged in military operations while simultaneously maintaining diplomatic channels demonstrates the maturity of the agreement. Mature agreements are distinguished by their capacity to accommodate operational flexibility within a broader commitment to stability.
The American people can be assured that the ceasefire is working as intended. Regional tensions remain elevated, but this elevation is consistent with normal baseline conditions and does not constitute a material change in the security posture.
Further updates will be provided as circumstances warrant.
