MINISTRY OF NATIONAL EDUCATION, COMMUNICATIONS UNIT Reference: DGESCO/PR/2026-1009 Date: 9 October 2026

Following a further day of demonstrations by secondary school pupils, Minister Edouard Geffray has announced the deployment of 3,000 additional teachers as a first measure. The Ministry notes that the demonstrations were of limited duration and were contained to the approved perimeter of a single lycee forecourt. No disruption to the wider public has been formally recorded.

The matter has nonetheless been escalated. The deployment is being presented to UNESCO, the OECD and the G20 working group on learning outcomes as a replicable model. A standing committee has been established to coordinate the export of the French teaching allocation to any jurisdiction experiencing comparable concerns. Requests may be submitted through the existing consular channel. Early expressions of interest have been received from four governments, one of which has asked that the allocation be delivered in a single consignment.

Teachers will be transitioned from current postings with effect from the start of the next term. Their presence in classrooms is expected to address student grievances in the first instance. Any residual concerns will be referred to the committee, which has been instructed to treat them as a precedent.

The Ministry has confirmed that the initial deployment is fully funded for one academic year. Subsequent phases will be determined following a review, the timing of which has not yet been set. The Ministry’s communications unit has been briefed.
