Following a comprehensive inter-agency investigation spanning multiple fiscal quarters, law enforcement personnel conducted a search operation at a residential property in western Sydney on 21 June 2026. The operation resulted in the seizure of approximately 2.7 tonnes of cocaine, with an estimated street value of A$816 million.
The bunker in question had been operational for a period that internal reviews suggest was longer than initially anticipated. A subsequent audit of departmental communications identified several procedural gaps in the coordination between state and federal agencies, as well as delays in information-sharing protocols between local councils and law enforcement divisions. These matters are being addressed through a new inter-departmental working group scheduled to convene in Q4 2026.
It should be noted that while this single operation represents a significant seizure by volume, the broader structural issues enabling underground infrastructure to remain undetected for extended periods remain unresolved. The Australian Crime Commission has commissioned a separate report examining why building permits, electrical inspections, and soil surveys failed to trigger alerts within existing monitoring systems.
