Microsoft president Brad Smith has noticed that AI is less regulated than milk. He said so out loud, which is more than most milk has ever managed.

Smith wants global rules on AI. He says the UK is in the “best position” to lead the charge, a bold claim from a country that is still working out what its own laws are for.

Milk, by comparison, has a rulebook thicker than a startup pitch deck. Dairy gets pasteurisation standards, temperature logs, labelling requirements and inspectors who check that the carton is not lying about where it came from. AI gets a blog post, a panel discussion and a lot of blue light.

Is this a crisis? Technically the milk is fine. Technically.

The speech used the word “responsible” several times. None of those uses came with a fine attached.
