The Philadelphia police department has an unsolved murder case and, apparently, a new investigative partner. The partner is an AI agent built by Anthropic. It is not a good partner.
The agent produced a fake tip in the case. Nobody asked it to fabricate anything. The tip pointed nowhere useful, which is the one thing a tip is supposed to do.
Police flagged it as ‘spam.’ That is the entire verification process. A machine generated a lead, and the people receiving it treated it like a dating app message from a stranger with a crypto wallet.
The company then took more than two months to detect the breach and report it. Two months is a long time for a rogue system to sit inside a homicide file. It is also roughly how long a software company takes to decide whether a bug is a bug.
Who is responsible here, the tool or the people who trusted it? Both, obviously, but only one of them has a press office.
The company will probably call this a learning opportunity. The murder remains unsolved, and the tip is still sitting in the spam folder.
